Linux is becoming more popular as an alternative to the Microsoft operating systems. In addition, Linux makes a powerful server. Chances are, though, that since you are probably already familiar with Microsoft Windows, you will find Linux a little strange. But after reading this book, you will find it strange no more. This book assumes that you have a basic understanding of GUI operating systems and a little understanding of command prompt operating systems. This book starts by explaining what Linux is and how to install it. Next, before getting into the complexities related to Linux, it explains how to run both the command interface and the X Window (GUI) interfaces. Then it homes in on the nuts and bolts of Linux by going over the kernel, the boot manager, and many of the other things that make Linux what it is today. The last part of the book focuses on the common networking services such as installing a web server or email server, establishing file and print sharing, or enabling DNS or DHCP services. Each chapter begins with basic concepts and ends with questions. In addition, hands-on exercises to reinforce basic skills and troubleshooting practices are included. Important websites that will allow you to go beyond the book and to help find more information when you encounter problems are also listed. While the book covers Linux in general with a little bit more emphasis on Red Hat Linux, it shows you how to install Red Hat, SuSE and Debian Linux; discusses a wide range of programs; and provides hands-on exercises with Mandrake Linux. By the time you are done with this book, you should be able to use any Linux distribution and be able to adapt to it as Linux gets better and better. As you go through the book, you will notice that a lot of information is repeated. This allows the chapters to be taught out of order and helps to complete the overall picture. In addition, I have found that the best way to teach this material is to repeat the information several times and combine it with hands-on exercises. For those of you who want to pursue the COMPTIA's Linux+ exam, this book covers everything that is Linux-related. If you decide to take the Linux+ exam, I recommend that you also take the A+ exam because both exams cover a lot of PC-related items such as installing, configuring and troubleshooting common PC components (e.g.; hard drives and motherboards). For more information about the COMPTIA's Linux exam, please visit the following websites: http://www.comptia.org/certification/linuxplus/index.htm http://www.comptia.org/certification/linuxplus/all_about_linuxplus.htm About the CDs This book includes Mandrake Linux 9.1, which comes on three CDs. As you use Mandrake Linux, you will find that it is one of the best distributions available. The installation procedures are shown in the exercises in Chapter 2 and exercises throughout the book are written for Mandrake Linux 9.1. These CDs are the same as the downloaded version available from Mandrake, and Mandrake or Prentice Hall are not providing any technical support for these CDs. For more information about acquiring copies of Linux and the GPL license that accompanies Linux, see Chapter 2 or visit the Mandrake Software websites (http://www.mandrakesoft.comorhttp://www.mandrakelinux.com).
